Webster defines personality as “the complex of characteristics that distinguishes an individual…esp: the totality of an individual’s behavioral and emotional characteristics.” In Mt. 28:16-20 Jesus made a clear distinction that the Holy Spirit is one of the three divine Persons. He is a person or an individual with behavioral and emotional characteristics. What are these characteristics?
1. The Holy Spirit speaks. St. Paul had said this one thing: “How well the Holy Spirit spoke through the prophet Isaiah to your ancestors! For he said, “God and say to this people: You will listen and listen, but not understand; you will look and look, but not see, because this people’s minds are dull, and they have stopped up their ears and closed their eyes. Otherwise… they would turn to me, says God, and I would heal them.” (Acts 28:25-27). 2. The Holy Spirit teaches. Jesus answered his disciples, “I have told you this while I am still with you. The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and make you remember all that I have told you,” (Jn 14:25-26). He empowers us with His gifts of wisdom and understanding; enlightens us through our study of the Scriptures, hearing sermons and/or teachings, and meditations/contemplations. He brings to our minds Jesus’ teachings, works, and miracles. 3. The Holy Spirit strengthens. “And so it was that the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had a time of peace. Through the help of the Holy Spirit it was strengthened and grew in numbers, as it lived in reverence for the Lord,” (Acts 9:”31). By His omnipotence, love, gentleness and compassion, the Holy Spirit “strengthens” or makes them firm in the faith, powerful in confessing Jesus as the Lord and Savior, faithful in following Christ, and bold in spreading the Good News. 4. The Holy Spirit helps our weaknesses. “In the same way the Spirit also comes to help us, weak as we are. For we do not know how we ought to pray; the Spirit himself pleads with God for us in groans that words cannot express. And God, who sees into our hearts, knows what the thought of the Spirit is; because the Spirit pleads with God on behalf of his people and in accordance with his will,” (Ro 8:26-27). 5. The Holy Spirit makes us God’s children. “So then, my brothers, we have an obligation, but it is not live as our human nature wants us to. For if you live according to your human nature, you are going to die, but if by the Spirit you put to death your sinful actions, you will live. Those who are led by God’s Spirit are god’s sons. For the Spirit that God has given you does not make you slaves and cause you to be afraid; instead, the Spirit makes you God’s children, and by the Spirit’s power we cry out to God, “Father! my Father!” God’s Spirit joins himself to our spirits to declare that we are God’s children. Since we are his children, we will possess the blessings he keeps for his people, and we will also possess with Christ what God has kept for him; for if we share Christ’s suffering, we will also share his glory,” (Ro 8:12-17). 6. The Holy Spirit is saddened. “And do not make god’s Holy Spirit sad; for the Spirit is God’s mark of ownership on you, a guarantee that the Day will come when God will set you free. Get rid of all bitterness, passion, and anger. No more shouting or insults, no more hateful feelings of any sort. Instead, be kind and tender-hearted to one another, and forgive one another, as God has forgiven you through Christ,” (Eph 4: 30-32). 7. The Holy Spirit is resisted. “How stubborn you!” Stephen went on to say: “How heathen your hearts, how deaf you are to God’s message! You are just like your ancestors: you too have always resisted the Holy Spirit! Was there any prophet that your ancestors did not persecute? They killed God’s messengers, who long ago announced the coming his righteous Servant. And now you have betrayed and murdered him. You are the ones who received God’s law, that was handed down by angels- yet you have not obeyed it,” (Acts 7:51-53). 8. The Holy Spirit creates. “And now, Job, listen carefully to all that I have to say. Iam ready to say what’s on my mind. All my words are sincere, and I am speaking the truth. God’s Spirit made me and gave me life,” (Job 33:1-4). When we recite the Nicene Creed, we profess: “We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. He is wrshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.” (CCC, 50) |
